Next Year's Words: A New Paltz Reader's Forum

The Elting Memorial Library is proud to host the fourth installment of the ninth season of Next Year's Words, a New Paltz reader's forum! This reading series features writers from the Hudson Valley, occasional guests, and an open mic. The event can be attended in-person in the Steinberg Reading Room or viewed over Zoom. We aim to mix young and seasoned voices, juxtaposing works of fiction, poetry, memoir and nonfiction from different stages of life. Includes an open mic, refreshments, and intriguing introductions. Ann Lauinger has published 3 books of poetry: Persuasions of Fall (winner of the Agha Shahid Ali Prize); Against Butterflies (a finalist for the Eugene Paul Nassar Prize); and Dime Saint, Nickel Devil (2022). Her poems have appeared in Alimentum, The Cumberland River Review, Georgia Review, Lightwood, Parnassus, Plant-Human Quarterly, Smartish Pace, The Southern Poetry Review, Valley Voices and Zone 3; such anthologies as The Bedford Introduction to literature, In a Fine Frenzy: Poets Respond to Shakespeare, and A Slant of Light; and been featured on Poetry Daily, Verse Daily, and Martha Stewart Living Radio. She is professor emerita at Sarah Lawrence College, where she taught medieval and Renaissance literature. A member of the Slapering Hol Press Advisory Committee, she lives in Ossining, New York.

David Appelbaum is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, SUNY-New Paltz. He has published many poetry and philosophy books. Some of his poetry titles include Everyday Spirits, Notes on Water, Portuguese Sailor Boy, Collector of Lapsed Times and Otherwise in 2 (2022). He founded the literary small press Codhill Press, and for 10 years was editor in chief of Parabola Magazine.

Violet Snow is a fiction writer, memoirist, and freelance journalist, often writing about history and ancestors. Her articles have appeared in the New York Times “Disunion” blog, Civil War Times, Woodstock Times, American Ancestors, The Record of Bergen County NJ, Jewish Currents, and other periodicals. Her fiction and memoir have been published in Otter Magazine, Pilgrimage, Tinker Street, and the podcast series “The Strange Recital.” Afternoon of a Sadhu is her memoir about wandering through India on foot at age 22. The feminist journal Minerva Rising printed an excerpt from her historical novel, To March or to Marry, about suffrage and women's clubs in the early 1900s.
