1:00-3:30 Crisis Communications for Libraries: Navigating Challenges with Confidence with Beth Tomev, Wisconsin DPI
Note: The workshop is in person only.
Is your library prepared in case of a crisis? During this workshop, you will learn effective strategies for managing crisis communications, ensuring your libraries respond swiftly and confidently during times of uncertainty or emergency. Topics include preparing communication plans, crafting clear and consistent messaging, and using various channels to keep staff, patrons, and the public informed. Attendees will explore real-world library crises and discuss best practices for managing public perception, supporting library staff, and minimizing the damage while preserving your library’s reputation.
Beth Tomev is the Data and Communications Director for Library Services at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Prior to joining the Library Services Team, she served as the DPI’s Director of Communication under former State Superintendent Carolyn Stanford Taylor coordinating the agency’s comprehensive communications plan, and in tandem with other DPI cabinet members, orchestrated the agency’s statewide crisis communication responses. Beth came to the DPI from Illinois where she worked as the Acting Director of Communications for the Governor of Illinois. Before being called to the Governor’s Office, she ran her own P.R./Public Affairs firm supporting communication needs for organizations of all sizes up to Fortune 100 companies, including Coca-Cola and Altria. Tomev began her career in television news as a producer and video editor for WCIA, WNIT, and WNDU-TV and as executive producer in the #3 market in the nation for FOX News Chicago. Beth has a B.A. in Political Science and a B.A. in English from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an M.B.A. from the Kellstadt Graduate School of Business at DePaul University. She is married with two daughters who love to go to the library with their mom.
*Lunch will be a fajita buffet from Jose's Authentic Mexican Restaurant. The cost will be $15. Your library will be invoiced after the meeting.
