The Baldwin Public Library is please to host the Birmingham Museum for their historical lectures. Come in and hear about your local history from the knowledgeable staff.
Thursday, March 12; "Our Indigenous Heritage" Special Lecture Series features Leslie S. Edwards, “Anishinaabek Basket Weavers and Michigan's WPA (Works Progress Administration)” at the Baldwin Public Library at 7 PM. Archivist and historian Leslie S. Edwards will present this program as part of the Birmingham Museum’s special 2026 spring lecture series focusing on our Indigenous heritage. Using primary source documents and photographs, Leslie will highlight northern Michigan’s Indigenous basket makers and where their works were sold as early as the turn of the 20h century. In 1938, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) established the WPA Indian Handicraft Project. Leslie will present findings on if or how this project helped the economies of the Tribal nations in northern Michigan.
