Chess Tournament

Join us Saturday, August 8th at 9:00 AM for our first chess tournament at the library. All ages and skill levels are welcome. This is an unranked event run by a volunteer group.  Sign-up is required to reserve your spot. ♟️

This will be a three round Swiss-style tournament (random pairings first round, then winners playing winners/losers playing losers each round thereafter, as player count allows). Games will be timed, with each player having 20 minutes per game with a 3 second delay (A player's clock does not start counting down his/her time until 3 seconds after the other player made his/her move). Recording of games by players via the standard scientific chess notation is encouraged for verification of results and possible resolution of disputes/illegal moves. If a dispute occurs between two players who are not recording the game, the tournament director will make the best determination possible of the correct position/move. A completed move sheet/score card (if moves are recorded) for each game should be turned in to the tournament director after each game. It will be the responsibility of the winner of each game to report the result to the tournament director. For games ending in a draw, players are equally responsible for this.

Should there be an uneven number of players in any round, the player without an opponent will be granted a bye/win into the next round and will have the option of playing an informal game against the tournament director should they so choose (this game will not be recorded as a tournament result).  Chess sets and clocks provided by the library. The first games are scheduled to start at 10am, so please arrive 15 minutes early to allow for any announcements or instructions.
