Evaluating Hints or Potential Ancestors in your Family Tree

We all love to get Hints to research questions, but how can you tell the true facts from those that may sound too good to be true?  What if you don't know the source of those potential facts or what if they differ from what you thought you knew as true. Share with other genealogists and family researchers how you go about proving your facts or setting aside for later, those facts that don't quite fit.
