A Conversation About Censorship

Challenges to intellectual freedom take many forms, but it commonly appears in libraries as attempts to ban books. There is documented evidence that books have been banned as early as 212 BC! The American Library Association celebrates intellectual freedom and the right to read every year with Banned Books Week (September 22-28, 2024), highlighting the value of free and open access to information.

"A Community Conversation About Censorship" is Loutit District Library's next step in community education about intellectual freedom. On Thursday, September 26th, at 6:30 PM, Loutit District Library is hosting a panel of professionals from a variety of fields, including library law, library leadership, psychology, and authors. Listen to our panelists share their experiences of how book banning, censorship, and intellectual freedom have impacted their professions and the people for whom they advocate. Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions!

Panelists include:

  • Xio Axelrod - Bestselling Author
  • Nicole Lintemuth - Owner of Bettie's Pages Bookstore
  • Lance Werner - Kent District Library President
  • Kaitlin McLaughlin - Former Director of Patmos Library
  • Claire Membiela - Library of Michigan Law Consultant
  • Betsy Pyle - Clinical Social Work/Therapist

with moderation by LDL Executive Director, Ellen Peters!

Learn more about book challenges throughout the ages (both locally and globally), read opinions on what books mean to our community, share your own thoughts, and learn more about how to protect intellectual freedom through our interactive, educational exhibit at Loutit District Library from September 20 -- October 31. The exhibit includes books that have been banned (ban = removal of materials) or challenged (challenge = attempts to remove or restrict materials) in libraries, schools, and more around the country in the last 50+ years.

Loutit District Library is committed to maintaining a diverse and inclusive collection that allows everyone to find their “just right book.” We encourage all parents to decide what books are right for their family. Unsure about age appropriateness or content? Visit one of our service desks for support!
