"Norman Sasowsky was born in Brooklyn, New York City in 1931.
His first experience with art was as a Junior High School student in New York, and later at Abraham Lincoln High, where the Chairman of the Art Department, Leon Friend, was an outstanding teacher.
He received a one year scholarship upon graduating and chose to attend The Art Students League of New York in 1951 where he studied with Harry Sternberg, Kenneth Hayes Miller, and briefly with Reginald Marsh. He then went on to study at The City College of New York where he earned his Bachelor of Arts and Masters degrees. . He attended New York University and earned a Doctor of Education degree in 1972
In order to earn a living he worked in art studios and publications as a production assistant and did some freelance illustration
He first started teaching in Hell's Kitchen section of Manhattan in a Junior High School and then in Junior High School in Queens and then in High School. Later he obtained a teaching position at the University of Delaware, taught many years, and is now Professor Emeritus.
In 1952 he rented a studio in 1 Union Square, NYC, one floor beneath his former teacher, Reginald Marsh. When Marsh died unexpectedly in 1954, his widow hired Sasowsky to care for her husband's work. This entailed cataloging all the work left in his Estate, arranging exhibitions, and many other activities related to Marsh's work. He did this for twenty five years, initially under the guidance of Lloyd Goodrich, then Director of the Whitney Museum of American Art.
In the 1990s he published four Artist's Books combining text and his images which are in private and library Special Collections, notably University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, University of Washington, New York Public Library Print Collection, and the Smithsonian Library. He also authored two books on Reginald Marsh.
He has created 13 short videos related to his work. These can be seen on youtube (username: 1norsky).
He's had more than twelve one-person exhibitions, including the Delaware Art Museum, Widener University, and West Chester University, and participated in many group exhibitions. His work is in many private, corporate, and public collections throughout the country.
During all this time, while teaching, he married, had two sons, and continued to practice art when he could find the time and energy. His interest in art continues unabated to the present. And, over the years, he has continued to exhibit his work.
He currently lives in New Paltz, NY."
