Pamela Cameron, Kalamazoo discovered Sport’s true story while preparing to be a volunteer lighthouse keeper. She researched and wrote the book so youth could experience an era in Great Lakes maritime history, and then see the connection to their lives.
Sport, the main character in the book, was a Newfoundland - Retriever who lived on the United States Lighthouse Service Tender Hyacinth from 1914 when he was rescued by the crew, until July 19, 1926, when he died aboard the ship and was buried at sea off Ludington, Michigan on July 20, 1926. The book highlights some of Sport’s adventures, including being lost in Chicago and a trip on a Great Lakes passenger ship. The book is illustrated by Renée Graef, who used historical documents to create accurate details of the ship and surroundings.
