Climatic Clarity: Understanding Local Temperature Trends through 127 years of Mohonk Preserve Data: Presentation by Steve Mazzuca

There continues to be a lot of questions on the topic of Global Warming. The most basic question being: “How do we know that the temperature is actually rising?”. There is a lot of confusion and emotion around this question. This analysis attempts to answer that question and to determine how much, if any, change has occurred over time.

Mohonk Preserve has been taking daily temperature measurements since 1896 with over 46,000 days of weather observations being recorded. The measurements have been taken in a manner that ensures consistent and accurate measurements over time.

This publicly available data is ideal for our purposes. A simple to understand tool, called Process Behavior Analysis, has been used to understand what the data is trying to tell us.

Steve Mazzuca is a retired IBM Principal Data Scientist and Executive Project Manager. He has over 20 years of experience in driving change through objective analytics. He has a technical background that combines hands-on expertise in data analysis, quality management, process improvement and Lean Six Sigma which he uses to drive continual improvement in targeted business operations.

Steve holds eight patents and has degrees in Physics, Italian and Electrical Engineering. He is a member of the Town of Gardiner Climate Smart Committee, Chair of the Mid-Hudson ASQ (American Society for Quality) Section, and President of the Board of Directors for Mid-Hudson Works.
