After iron ore was discovered near Marquette, Michigan, in 1844, the city soon developed into Lake Superior’s first great port. From 1855 to the 1880s, Marquette received more vessels in a single week than Duluth, Minnesota, did in an entire season. With that increased traffic, however, came increased accidents.
