Intro to Oral Storytelling for all Genders
Discover the power of oral storytelling to bring communities together--to unearth and ignite our creativity, our individual and collective voices, and expand our healing potentials. An intro class for anyone interested in learning how to access their personal stories and begin to share them in an oral storytelling style. No creative or arts background needed. Katie Elevitch (she/they) is a Rockland County, NY based award winning multi-media community storytelling artist and director, an award nominated arts educator, the Founder and Executive Director of the former community creative arts space and Gallery, 95 1/2 Main in Nyack, NY and the new storytelling initiative Story Space Arts. A queer single mom, who is also an accomplished fine arts curator, singer and musician, songwriter, and a certified Yoga and Meditation Teacher, Katie is passionate about helping to create techniques, and hold spaces for, those who feel compelled to further explore their authentic voices, tell their stories and build community in a fun, creative, nurturing, inclusive and safe way. Katie's many honors include giving a TedX talk "Community Story Space as Revolution" in the 2020 TedX Event at Bergen Community College, exhibiting her Multi-Media Storytelling Project "Mother Body" at the 2018 Garner Arts Center Arts festival as an invited featured artist, and facilitating a storytelling workshop for women with HIV/AIDS in the Global Village for Housing Works at the 2018 International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam NL. Since 2016, Katie has presented her work and classes at Ramapo College, Rockland Center for the Arts, Garner Arts Center, Arts Council of Rockland, 95 1/2 MAIN, Nyack Library and more.
