Isle Dernière: The History of Last Island and its Destruction

Last Island, Louisiana was a playground resort for wealthy Louisianians in the mid 1800's.  It was called "Last Island" since it was the last barrier island on the Louisiana coast as one traveled west.  It could be argued that a "perfect storm" in 1856 spelled the end for Last Island- a major hurricane that would be considered at least a Category 4 by modern standards. It demolished the island and killed hundreds of people, leaving it vacated ever since.

John Singleton, a local history researcher, will discuss the history of the island and the hurricane that destroyed it at the Main Library at Goodwood on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.
