Lansing is the state capital of Michigan and is located in Ingham County. It is the fifth largest city in the state with a population of 114,297. The city is often referred to as “Mid-Michigan”. Lansing is the only capital in the U.S. that is not a county seat. The capitol building took six years to build and has acres of hand-painted murals on its interior walls. It is a popular destination for visitors. Other attractions include Michigan Historical Center, W.J. Beal Botanical Garden, and Potter Park Zoo. The area was founded in 1835 by two brothers from New York and was originally called Biddle City. Most of the area was flooded, so they sold the land to people from their hometown with the claim that the area was more hospitable than in actuality. The new settlers gave the city its current name, Lansing, after a city in New York. Some fun events in the city are Michigan Nordic Fire Festival, Maple Syrup Festival, and the Capital City Film Festival.
