Morticulture: the practice of intentionally leaving dead trees and downed woody debris in forests to enhance biodiversity, soil health, and habitat

The Southwick Land Trust is bringing an informative talk from Margery Winters on the importance of declining and dead trees. Once considered a wasted resource and a hazard in forest landscapes, dead trees and logs are now known to be valuable and essential parts of a healthy forest ecosystem.  Join Margery Winters from the Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton, CT (and president of the Simsbury Land Trust!) to learn about morticulture and how dead and dying trees provide habitat and food for many terrestrial and aquatic species, act as seedbeds for new trees, and serve as a source of water, energy, carbon, and nutrients for the entire forest.
