Ribbon Cutting for Elizabeth Denison Forth Mural

Please join us for a public ribbon cutting and press event to celebrate the completion of downtown Pontiac’s newest mural, featuring historic Pontiac figure Elizabeth Dennison Forth on Wednesday, August 17, at 10:00 a.m.

’Lisette’ Dennison Forth was the first black property owner in the State of Michigan, after being born a slave in Macomb County and making a ‘daring escape to Canada.’ She owned property in what is now the City of Pontiac, including where Oak Hill Cemetery now exists. To read more about her life, please see the February 2022 article in the Oakland Press by Peg McNichol.

The 60’ mural on the rear wall of the parking structure attached to the Riker Building at 35 W. Huron Street, is the work of artist Zach Curtis. The project received support from Main Street Pontiac, which donated 40% of the funds necessary for the completion of the project, and Main Street Rocks, of Durand, MI, whom Curtis cites as an additional sponsor of the work.

The event will take place in front of the mural, in the parking lot adjacent to the Riker Building parking structure’s west wall, west of Wayne Street, accessible off of Clinton Street. Speakers will include Council Woman Melanie Rutherford, Mayor Tim Greimel, and others to be announced.
