Royal Oak, MI
The city of Royal Oak is a suburb of Detroit, Michigan with a population of 57,236. The city is the 8th largest municipality in Oakland County and the 27th largest municipality in Michigan. Royal Oak was named by Territorial Governor, Lewis Cass. While surveying, Cass came across an oak tree that reminded him of the Royal Oak in which King Charles II hid in in order to escape capture by the Roundheads after the Battle of Worcester.
Every year since 1976, Royal Oak has been awarded the title of “Tree City USA” by National Arbor Day Foundation because of the city’s dedication to planting and preserving trees. A popular event is Arts, Beats, and Eats. Points of interest include The Detroit Zoo, Royal Oak Music Theatre, and the National Shrine of the Little Flower.
