Strength in Community: An Unconference for BIPOC Library Workers

The IDEA Project planning team invites you to an unconference specifically for BIPoC Staff at all levels working in Wisconsin Public Libraries on May 20, 2025, at Olbrich Gardens in Madison, WI, from 9:30 AM – 3:30 PM. Registration open until May 14, 2025.

This event is designed to uplift and center the experiences of BIPoC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) library workers in Wisconsin. Expect an interactive day filled with networking, discussion, and learning, highlighting the following topics:

  • Tribal and Indigenous libraries
  • BIPoC-centered mental health & mindfulness
  • Workplace culture & community building

This isn’t a traditional conference—it’s an “unconference”, meaning there won’t be long lectures or one-way presentations. Instead, it’s a collaborative, engaging space where everyone contributes, learns, and connects.

More details:

  • Free to attend (includes breakfast snack & lunch)
  • Mileage reimbursement available for attendees traveling 25+ miles
  • Optional post-event social at a local restaurant (self-pay for food & drinks)

We hope you’ll join us for a day of connection, conversation, and community!

Registration open until May 14, 2025

This project was made possible thanks to the Wisconsin Department of Instruction (DPI) Public Library Development Team, with funding support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. It was organized by The IDEA Project: Wisconsin Libraries In Action, with input from an advisory group of public and public-tribal library workers.
