The Dean of Detroit Architects – George D. Mason (Central)

Renowned Detroit historian Clarence M. Burton once wrote, quite simply George DeWitt Mason was “the dean of Detroit architects.” During his career, which began in 1873, Mason played a significant role in crafting the architectural scene in Metro Detroit. He created numerous historic buildings in and around the city including the Detroit Yacht Club, and the Detroit Masonic Temple, along with the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. He also designed at least twelve homes in Grosse Pointe such as 1040 Harvard; 1 Donovan Place; 33 Oldbrook Lane; and 315 Lakeland.  This is part of the Higbie Maxon Agney Lecture Series.  PB
