Attend our free film screening!
In honor of the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, who was a major contributor to funk music, we are celebrating his belated birthday by showing the film WE WANT THE FUNK!.
After the free preview screening, BooGie, JB and DynoWright from the Hip Hop Movie Club podcast and YouTube show will lead a panel discussion.
We are pleased to announce that PBS39 will be partnering with the library at this event. PBS39 will have an information table.
WE WANT THE FUNK! is a syncopated voyage through the history of funk music, spanning from African, soul, and early jazz roots, to its rise into the public consciousness. Featuring James Brown's dynamism, the extraterrestrial funk of George Clinton's Parliament Funkadelic, transformed girl group Labelle, and Fela Kuti's Afrobeat, the story also traces funk's influences on both new wave and hip-hop.
WE WANT THE FUNK! will debut on April 8, 2025, at 10 p.m. ET on PBS and the PBS app (check local listings).
PBS39 will air WE WANT THE FUNK! on Sunday, April 20th.
