The mighty and magnificent J.L. Hudson’s Building stood at Gratiot and Woodward for more than 70 years, serving the metro area as a 29-story-high destination for shopping. For kids growing up in the 40’s and 50’s, the magnitude and elegance of its charming design turned family holiday outings into something magical. The Book Club of Detroit is hosting a lecture at the Ferndale Library on Sat., Aug. 6, led by Lucas McGrail, covering the architectural history and evolution of the J.L. Hudson’s Department Store in downtown Detroit. ***To learn more about Hudon’s, call the Ferndale Library to reserve your seat (space is limited): 248-546-2504. McGrail,an architect and Detroit historian who has lived in or around Detroit since 1979, will bring a display of exclusive historical artifacts from this famous Detroit landmark. This is the the latest addition to the Book Club of Detroit’s 2016 lecture series on Metro Detroit’s history and heritage. has worked for Cannon Design, The Garrison Company, & Walbridge Aldinger. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Architecture from the University of Detroit Mercy, has been accepted into the masters of architecture program at Lawrence Tech and has been involved with the re-gentrification of many abandoned but historic buildings in Detroit. McGrail is a Livonia resident; he frequently lectures at colleges and community organizations on the history and architecture of Detroit. Did you know? The Hudson's’ building had 51 passenger elevators, 17 freight elevators, eight employee elevators and 48 escalators. Its largest freight elevator could accommodate a semi trailer. WOW!
